The grant will support research to assess the feasibility and implementation of an advanced solid-state lighting system intervention with fully controlled light spectra intensity timing directionality and duration dose of light in a hospital setting mimicking the characteristics of natural light across the visible spectra. The objective of this research is to determine if advanced lighting systems can reduce sleep disruption which in turn would improve immune systems and time of recovery for patients.

The grant will support research to assess the impact of luminance degradation of exit signs using light emitting diode led technology. the goals of the research are a to develop a method to measure with sufficient accuracy and precision the average luminance of exit signs b to validate the field measurement method through measurements in the field at a limited number of locations and c to determine if there is a relationship between the documented or estimated age and average luminance of the exit signs evaluated in the field.
